Capacity — what if it works too well?
About this article

A funnel model usually gets built to answer "will this lose money?" — but for consultants and experts who sell their own time, a good month can create a different problem: more delivery hours than you have.
Every block in a FunnelCAD funnel can carry your time: hours per person on a step or an offer, hours per subscriber a month on a subscription, and fixed hours every month. FunnelCAD calculates the spread of the hours a month takes you the same way it calculates the profit — from the same exact odds, with no simulation — and compares it with the capacity you set.
You set capacity in hours a week, and the scorecard shows the load in the same unit: a month's hours ÷ 4.345, the number of weeks in an average month. So 23 h a week is about 100 hours a month.
Under Delivery load, the scorecard shows your hours in an average week against your capacity, the busy month — about one month in twelve is this busy — and how often a month goes over capacity.
An example
In the homepage's example funnel, each free check takes you 1 h and each audit client 25 h, and you have 23 h a week — about 100 hours a month.
| Delivery load | Today (5% of checks buy) | Twice as many buy (10%) |
|---|---|---|
| Average week | 11.4 h | 17.7 h |
| Busy month | 21.2 h a week | 31 h a week |
| Months over capacity | 5% | 23% |
Today, the average month needs about 50 of your 100 hours, and still one month in twenty goes over. Now suppose twice as many checks buy: the average month then needs 77 hours — comfortably under 100 on paper — but 23% of months need more than 100. FunnelCAD reports that probability, not just the fact that it's possible in principle.
When the busy month goes past your capacity, the Load figure on the scorecard is marked as a warning.
A capacity warning is a prompt to decide before it happens, not after: hire, raise prices to shed some demand, or accept the overflow risk knowingly. The alternative — finding out mid-month that you've sold more delivery than you can do — is the failure mode this check exists to catch.
